Pre-operative Instructions

Food & Drink

Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery. If you take medications, then you may do so with a sip of water.

Medications

Stop all anti-inflammatories (Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve, Naprosyn/Naproxen, etc.) 7 days prior to your surgery. Do not take any vitamins or herbal medications that may thin your blood, including fish oil, turmeric, etc. If you are on a baby aspirin or blood thinner, please consult Dr. Takenishi whether you should take these medications prior to surgery. Your primary care physician should be consulted if on other blood thinners, such as coumadin, Plavix, Pradaxa, Eliquis, etc.  Please make sure our office has a complete list of all current medications, including dose and frequency taken, along with any drug allergies or skin allergies (ie. Adhesive tape, betadine, etc.).

Preparing for Surgery

Please keep the area of surgery (knee, shoulder, elbow, etc.) clean prior to surgery. We recommend taking a bath or shower and cleaning the surgical site well prior to surgery to decrease risk of infection. Please do not shave the area prior to surgery as this can increase your risk of infection.

Illness and Wounds

If you are feeling sick for any reason, have any active infections or are on antibiotics for any reason, please contact us immediately. We will need to postpone your surgery until any active infection is completely resolved.

If you have any cuts, scratches, open or healing wounds, then contact us right away. This may cause your surgery to be postponed until they are completely healed to decrease your risk of infection.

Transportation

You will need someone to drive you home after surgery. Please make sure you have this planned prior to the day of your surgery.

Time of Surgery

A representative from the hospital or surgery center will contact you the day prior to surgery to let you know what time to arrive at the facility. You should plan to arrive 3 hours prior to your scheduled surgery time. Please be prepared to come in anytime the day of surgery. This commonly can occur because we often are running ahead of schedule or there are changes to the schedule the same day of surgery.

If you do not get a call from the facility that you are scheduled, then please contact the location of your surgery or our office at 916-732-3005.

Cancellations

If you have to cancel your surgery, please give us at least one week’s notice so that we can reschedule other patients in this slot.

Questions
