What is Shoulder Replacement Surgery
Shoulder replacement surgery is a medical procedure in which a damaged or diseased shoulder joint is replaced with an artificial joint, typically made of metal and plastic components. This surgery is performed to relieve pain, improve joint function, and enhance the overall quality of life for individuals with conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or severe shoulder fractures. Common Shoulder Replacement Procedures can include:

Risks

Which shoulder replacement is right for you
There is no single shoulder replacement. The two main options work differently, and the choice is driven largely by the state of your rotator cuff.
- Anatomic total shoulder replacement recreates the natural ball-and-socket arrangement. It requires a functioning rotator cuff and generally gives the better range of rotation when that cuff is intact.
- Reverse total shoulder replacement switches the positions of the ball and socket so the deltoid can power the shoulder. This is what makes replacement possible when the rotator cuff is torn beyond repair, and it is also used for certain complex fractures.

When shoulder replacement is considered
The decision is driven by symptoms and function rather than by the X-ray alone. Replacement is usually considered when:
- Pain is no longer controlled by non-surgical treatment
- Pain wakes you at night or is present at rest
- Everyday tasks — dressing, reaching a shelf, driving — have become difficult
- Injections that used to help are wearing off quickly or no longer working
- Imaging confirms structural change that explains the symptoms

What to expect
Before surgery
Assessment includes examination, standing X-rays and usually a CT scan to plan implant positioning and assess bone stock. An MRI may be added where the state of the rotator cuff is not clear. Where relevant, medical optimisation beforehand — glycaemic control, smoking cessation — measurably affects outcomes.
The procedure
Shoulder replacement is performed under anaesthesia, usually with a nerve block for post-operative pain control. Depending on the patient and the procedure it may be done as a day case or with an overnight stay.
Recovery
Expect a sling for roughly six weeks and a staged rehabilitation programme, with most people managing daily activities comfortably by around three months and continuing to improve for six to twelve. Physical therapy is not optional — it is what converts a well-positioned implant into a working shoulder.
